WD 1TB My Passport Drive EXTREMELY Slow! WD External Drives. WD Portable Drives. Anytime I navigate around inside the drive via Windows Explorer it’s very slow. I’ve also tried it on my Linux box; same issues. Any help would be appreciated!!! I have encountered the same issue with my WD Passport 1TB drive. Can anyone please tell me. May 31, 2015 - I just got a new Western Digital My Passport 2tb USB drive. It is a USB 3 interface, but I am running it on USB 2 as that is all my laptop has.
I've just got a WD 500Gb My Passport 2.5' for backups. It takes 3 minutes for it to mount, and 3 minutes to unmount. The files are stored in encrypted disk images, for safety in case of drive loss.
Those disk images take 3 minutes to mount, and 3 minutes to unmount too. Any idea why it's so slow? I have an identical setup on my LaCie Rugged - I haven't timed it, but it's got to be under 30s. It's the 'standard' version rather than the 'mac' version, so I used Disk Utility to set it up. It comes with windoze backup software of some sort preinstalled - I assumed I'd wiped it when I partitioned the disk, but perhaps it's still there and slowing something down?
I don't know, I'm stumped. Are you using HFS+? How many partitions? Is this the USB only version of WD Passport? I have had some initial issues with my WD Passport USB only 2.5 inch HDD when it was formatted as FAT32 (MS-DOS).
However, since I re-formatted it to HFS+, it's been fine. The other possibility is that your drive's chipset could be flaky. I'm pretty sure I did it as HFS+. I've just gone to Disk Utility to check, and I can't see anywhere that would confirm it for me though. It's in two partitions, each of which are listed as MacOS Extended (Journaled). It is the USB only version. From memory, as I partitioned it I chose the option of allowing it to be a startup disk for an Intel Mac (I'm using a MBP 2007).
Disk Utility says it's GUID Partition Table. Does that answer the questions sufficiently?
